Frank Costello Assassination Attempt- This photo showing the iconic photograph of Luciano Family Boss Frank Costello with his head bandaged after the assassination attempt on his life. In 1957 after returning from his long exhile in Italy evading murder charges, fighting legal battles, and jail time, Vito Genovese was poised to muscle control of the Luciano Crime Family from his rival Frank Costello. Little by little Genovese began to carry more favor with the street gangsters of the family while the wealthy aristicaratic Costello grew more and more estranged from them. On May 2nd 1957 Vito Genovese made his move, sending a young Vincent Gigante to do the work, Gigante caught up with Costello in the lobby of his Park Ave apartment building. Before shooting Gigante yelled out "This is for you Frank"! Adding that dramatization to what should have been a clean piece of work caused Costello to flinch; a flinch that likely saved his life, causing the bullet to just graze his head. Staying true to Cosa Nostra Costello refused to identify the shooter, but knowing his days were numbered relinguished his title of representante to Genovese along with the family and retired.
